Now we are going to setup our reader for unboxing, in order to start reading tags, you will need:

  • The Vulcan RFID Iron USB Reader
  • the Included USB to Micro USB Cable
  • A sample pack of RFID tags
  • ThingMagic’s Universal Reader Assistant or URA Software or Vulcan RFID’s UHF Tag Read & Write Software

Unboxing the Vulcan RFID Iron

First let’s go ahead and take our Vulcan RFID Iron USB Reader out of the box along with its Micro USB to USB power cable. As you can see, it comes with hardware for mounting, but we will set that aside for now. I will go ahead and plug the Iron into the cable via the Micro USB connector, and then get my software up and running.

Today I’ll walk through setting up this USB reader with both the ThingMagic URA and Vulcan RFID’s Read and Write software.

First I’ll set it up with ThingMagic’s URA software.

ThingMagic's Universal Reader Assistant (URA)

Connect your Iron USB Reader to your computer via the included USB to Micro USB cable.

After you launch the URA software, ensure that the Serial Reader option is selected and click refresh if you do not see “USB Serial Port and the COM port” next to the reader name. After you hit refresh, your USB reader should populate. Click “Next”.

Select the Region - I’m going to choose NA2, although if you are using FCC standards, you can check NA2, NA3, or Open.

Then make sure the boxes next to Protocol and Antenna are checked, and click “Next”.

Then Click “Connect” on the next screen.

Once the reader is connected, you are ready to read RFID tags with the Vulcan RFID Iron USB Reader. Just click “Read” and ensure your RFID tags are in range of your reader. As you can see, this Iron reader is now reading our RFID tags in the area.

Now let’s jump to the Vulcan RFID Read & Write Software.

Vulcan RFID's UHF Tag Read & Write Software

Connect your Iron USB Reader to your computer via the included USB to Micro USB cable.

After opening the  Vulcan RFID Read and Write Software, select “Vulcan” in the Manufacturer drop-down, and in the Connection drop-down, select “Serial”, and then click “scan available ports”. Once the ports are scanned, or you manually typed in the COMPort your reader is using, click “connect reader”. Your Iron USB Reader should then let you know it’s connected via the read box.

You should then be able to place a tag on or near the reader and click read - and the software should display the tag’s EPC number in the read box to the right.
