In this article we will define application software, firmware, and middleware and talk about the key similarties and differences.

Key Takeaways: Software is any set of machine-readable instructions that directs a computer’s processor to perform specific operations. Software that resides specifically on a hardware component is called firmware. Firmware controls the operation of the device on which it is hosted. Middleware is a piece of software that usually runs in the background, essentially the “glue” that holds two other pieces of software together.

In this article, we discuss eight common questions and answers regarding RFID firmware. A few questions among these include “What is firmware?”, “What type of devices use firmware?”, and “Where is firmware located on the device?”.

Key Takeaways: Firmware is a piece of software that is programmed into the non-volatile memory of a device. Most electronic devices use some type of firmware (RFID readers, music players, mobile phones) in order to operate. Firmware is stored in a device’s non-volatile memory, which is read-only and programmed during the manufacturing process.

In this article, we discuss Middleware and its common functions. A few functions mentioned in the article include being able to manage devices, collecting & integrating data, and structuring data.

Key Takeaways: Middleware is a layer of software created to connect other components together such as hardware components, software programs, enterprise applications, and databases. Middleware can control various settings of RFID readers and provide a simple way to update any changes that need to be made. It also acts as a bridge, connecting different systems together and enabling the efficient transport of data.
